The health of five orangutans rescued from Bhograi in Balasore district is being closely monitored at Odisha’s Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar. A team of wildlife experts is carrying out regular health check-ups of the animals after they were brought to the zoo.The five orangutans were spotted on the morning of September 8 in the protected Casuarina forest at Rankotha in Bhograi. Following their detection, the animals were rescued and shifted to Nandankanan Zoological Park, where they are currently being kept.As part of their health assessment, three of the orangutan young ones have been found to be suffering from anaemia. One of them has severe anaemia, while the other two have mild symtoms.According to the health examination, supportive supplements are being given to the animals based on the recommendation of a committee. The young orangutans are also being examined regularly to keep track of their condition.On Wednesday, the veterinary team conducted X-rays of the chest, abdomen and skull of the young orangutans. Blood, serum and nasal swab samples were also collected during the health check-up.An in-house haematology test later detected anaemia in the three young orangutans. The remaining test reports are awaited.Further treatment will be decided after the reports are received. The animals will continue to remain under regular observation at Nandankanan as their health condition is monitored.
