The violent revenge drama has been cleared with only two minor modifications, despite being billed as one of the most intense and adult-oriented Indian films in recent times.
Directed by Geetu Mohandas, Toxic stars Yash alongside Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi, Rukmini Vasanth and Tara Sutaria. The film is scheduled to hit theatres on August 26.
Toxic gets ‘A’ rating with no cuts
According to the CBFC certification details, Toxic has a runtime of 3 hours and 12 minutes and has been cleared in Kannada and English.
The board has asked the makers to mute and replace two words or phrases in the Kannada version, with corresponding changes in the English subtitles. The film will also carry the mandatory anti-smoking and anti-drinking warnings.
Apart from these modifications, the CBFC has not ordered any cuts.
The film has, however, received an ‘A’ certificate, meaning it is restricted to adult audiences.
Internet reacts to CBFC decision
The decision quickly became a talking point on social media, with some users comparing Toxic’s certification with the treatment of other recent films.
Some online reactions specifically referenced Dhurandhar, another violent film that reportedly faced cuts, and questioned why Toxic received clearance without any major edits.
The discussion also turned towards the CBFC’s recent decision involving Hollywood superhero films. Some users sarcastically compared the clearance of Toxic with the reported removal of a kissing scene from Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
One social media reaction joked that the CBFC seemed to have “a problem with Spider-Man kissing”, while another questioned the board’s priorities when dealing with violence and intimate content.
Toxic has been surrounded by controversy
The film has generated considerable attention even before its release because of its violent imagery, adult themes and intimate sequences.
Some online discussions have also criticised the portrayal of women in certain scenes, while others have focused on the film’s treatment of sexuality and violence.
The CBFC’s decision to clear the film without cuts has therefore added another layer to the conversation surrounding Toxic.
Yash had warned that the film is not for children
Yash, who is also credited as a co-writer on the film, had previously spoken about its mature themes.
During an appearance on Aap Ki Adalat, the actor said children should not watch the film and stressed that it was made specifically for an adult audience.
Yash also described Toxic as a genuine film with a deeper story, while suggesting that adult viewers could decide for themselves what to take from its themes.
