FACOR Strengthens Emergency Preparedness Through Comprehensive External Onsite Mock Drills

Bhadark : Reinforcing its commitment to safety, operational excellence, and emergency preparedness, FACOR, a Vedanta Group company, successfully conducted External Onsite Mock Drills at its Charge Chrome Plant and Power Plant on 15 October 2026. The drills were organized as part of statutory compliance requirements and simulated high-risk emergency scenarios involving oil leakage, liquid oxygen leakage, fire incidents, rescue operations, evacuation, medical triage, hospital referral, firefighting, and coordinated emergency response activities.

The mock drills were witnessed by government authorities, including Mrs. Subashree Dipali Muduli, Assistant Director of Factories & Boilers, and Mr. Poren Soren, District Fire Officer, who observed the emergency response exercises and provided valuable recommendations for further strengthening emergency management systems.

The first drill was conducted at the Power Plant’s LDO Storage Area, simulating an oil leakage from an LDO transfer line that escalated into a fire within the dyke area. Upon activation of emergency protocols, FACOR’s Emergency Response Team promptly mobilized spill containment, firefighting, rescue, evacuation, and medical response operations. Three simulated casualties were rescued and shifted to the Medical Triage Centre for assessment. Based on the triage tagging system, the red-tagged casualty was referred to a nearby hospital, while yellow- and green-tagged casualties received first aid and were shifted to the Plant Occupational Health Centre for further care. The fire was successfully controlled, the leakage was arrested by trained personnel equipped with Chemical Protective Suits and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), and the area was declared safe following thorough inspection.

The second drill was conducted at the Charge Chrome Plant’s Liquid Oxygen Tank Area, simulating a liquid oxygen leakage from a flange connection. The scenario involved a cold-burn injury, a fall-related injury, and a fire caused by welding sparks in an oxygen-enriched atmosphere. Emergency response teams promptly secured the area, initiated firefighting operations, and undertook oxygen dilution and leakage control measures. Two simulated casualties received immediate medical attention and were shifted to the Plant Occupational Health Centre. The oxygen leakage was successfully arrested by trained responders using specialized protective equipment, and firefighting operations were completed as per established emergency procedures. Following inspection and safety verification, the area was declared safe and the all-clear signal was sounded.

The drills provided an opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of FACOR’s Emergency Response Framework, strengthen coordination among response teams, and assess readiness in managing complex emergency situations. The successful execution of both exercises demonstrated the preparedness of employees and response teams to act swiftly and effectively during critical incidents.

The observations and feedback received from the regulatory authorities will be incorporated into FACOR’s emergency preparedness and response systems to further enhance safety standards and emergency management capabilities. Through regular mock drills, continuous training, and proactive risk management practices, FACOR remains committed to fostering a safe, resilient, and prepared workplace for employees, business partners, and surrounding communities.
