Cyclone ‘Arnab’: ECoR Intensifies Safety Measures and Arranges Assistance for Stranded Passengers

Bhubaneswar, October 29, 2026 — In the wake of cyclonic storm ‘Arnab’, torrential rainfall totaling approximately 550 mm has triggered a sharp rise in water levels across southern Odisha, pushing the Bahuda River in Ganjam district, the Baghalati Dam, and the railway bridge between Ichchapuram (IPM) and Jhadupudi (JPI) above the danger mark. To prevent untoward incidents and ensure utmost passenger safety, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) has enforced stringent precautionary measures, including the strategic diversion of several key train services along the Howrah–Chennai route. Demonstrating strong administrative synergy, ECoR is maintaining real-time communication with the district administration and participating in high-level reviews with the State Government to synchronize railway operations with evolving weather conditions, while closely monitoring the situation around the clock through social media, Rail Madad, and internal tracking systems to address grievances swiftly. To support those affected, arrangements are actively underway to distribute essential supplies such as drinking water and food provisions to passengers stranded at various stations, alongside the deployment of additional Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel and Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) to guide travelers, manage crowds, and address immediate concerns. ECoR urges all passengers to cooperate with the railway administration during this challenging period and strongly advises travelers to check real-time train status via the National Train Enquiry System (NTES), official mobile applications, or ECoR’s official social media handles before commencing their journeys.
