Chennai, 5/2(AO Bureau) : Thanks to the brilliant innings of Joe Root and opener Dominic Sibley, England have scored 263 runs, losing three wickets at the end of the first day of the first Test against India. Joe Root has scored the 20th century of his career. At the end of the day’s play, Route 128 is unbeaten by scoring runs. In the last over of the day, Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Sibley (87). Root and Sibley shared a 200-run partnership for the third wicket. Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets from India and Ravichandran Ashwin took one wicket.
While Sibley showed a complete amount of restraint in his innings, Root made attractive shots. Fast bowler Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, Shahbaz Nadeem, and Washington Sundar made every effort but could not get them out. In the first two seasons, England played slowly and added 67 and 73 respectively. In the last session, the England team scored 123 runs in 33 overs. Earlier, openers Rory Burns and Sibley gave England a strong start by adding 63 runs for the first wicket. Both were moving towards a big partnership but Burns lost his wicket in the spur of playing non-essential reverse sweep shots off Ashwin’s ball. Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant took his easy catch.
New batsman Dan Lawrence was lbw to Bumrah. Indian captain Virat Kohli handed the ball to Ashwin in the eighth over itself. Openers Sibley and Burns played well in the first hour. Ishant and Bumrah, playing the first Test in India, played sensibly and did not let India get early success early.
