RP Act provisions constitutionally sound: Centre opposes plea in SC for life-time ban on convicted politicians

New Delhi, 26/2: The Union government has opposed before the Supreme Court a plea for life ban on convicted politicians as against the disqualification for six years under the Representation of People Act.

Referring to the principles of proportionality and reasonability, it said the issue whether life time ban would be appropriate or not fell with the domain of Parliament and there is nothing inherently unconstitutional in limiting the effect of penalties.
