Bhubaneswar, 23/6(Ao Bureau): Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik today chaired a meeting of the state-level Disaster Management Committee through video conferencing to clarify the state government’s approach to disaster preparedness and management.
The Chief Minister said that despite the impact of the epidemic, Odisha has managed to cope with various disasters globally. Our policy for disaster management is ‘all lives are precious’. In addition, our Disaster Management Policy is being implemented with a focus on working with all departments of the government (Whole of Government Approach). This can be done by taking the best steps to reduce the impact of the disaster.
“Odisha is one of the most disaster-stricken states in our country,” he said. We regularly deal with floods, storms, and droughts. Climate change is expected to intensify, with more disasters occurring. “In 2020-21, our state has been hit by a typhoon,” he said.
“We need a lot of money to be made to provide permanent security for the recurrence of the cyclone,” he said.
He said the southwest monsoon was now in effect in Odisha and said that June was an important time for October. Natural disasters such as storms and floods can occur during this time. “We have to be fully prepared to deal with any situation in the event of a disaster,” he said.
All information systems, rescue and relief programs, drinking water supplies, health and animal care, etc. must be properly prepared. Audraff and fire service units must be vigilant to take immediate action. It is important to stock up on food and beverages in high-risk and inaccessible areas. He emphasized the need to focus on green forage in the event of a catastrophe and to set up a livestock camp.
The Chief Minister has directed to keep the control rooms open 24 hours a day in all the districts and departments concerned. In addition, the Chief Minister advised to pay special attention to pregnant women, differently abled and mentally retarded individuals, children, widows and the elderly during the relief and rescue operations. The Chief Minister called for immediate implementation of all issues such as finding and rescuing people, first aid, relief arrangements, immediate repair and restoration of infrastructure related to essential services and restoration of lost livelihoods. Humanitarian assistance is the right of the people affected by the disaster. He encouraged ordinary people as well to take part in solving this great task: “One of the things you and other people can do is keep up the pressure … there are going to be some difficult decisions for government”.

MP Shri Chandrashekhar Sahu, MLA Shri Narasimha Mishra, MLA Shri Jayant Sadangi, MLA Shri Pratap Keshari Deo, MLA Shri Anant Das were the keynote speakers at the meeting and gave their well-thought-out views on disaster management.
