Balugan: In a rare and alarming incident, a shooting took place last night in the waters of Chilika Lake, leaving one fisherman critically injured. The firing occurred near Sipia village under the Krishnaprasad police station limits in Puri district, Odisha. The injured fisherman has been identified as Bira Jali of Chandraput village. According to reports, three fishermen from Chandraput village under Balugaan police station limits had gone into Chilika Lake in a boat for fishing. While they were fishing in the Chilika Lake near Sipia village, a group of other fishermen allegedly arrived and opened fire using country-made guns (chhara). To save themselves, two of the fishermen jumped into the water and managed to flee, while the third was caught by the attackers. The attackers reportedly took the caught fisherman with them and later shot him at close range in the thigh, causing serious injuries. The injured fisherman has been admitted to Balugaon hospital for treatment.
