Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced on Thursday that the state government plans to generate energy and produce coal from garbage. The Housing and Urban Development Department is working on this initiative, the CM said during a cleanliness drive organized by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) in the old Bhubaneswar area today.
The CM informed that the capital city generates around 800 tons of garbage daily, comprising 400 tons of wet waste and approximately 390 tons of dry waste. To address this issue, BMC is considering setting up a Waste-to-Energy Plant, Biogas Composting Plant, and Waste-to-Briquette or Charcoal Plant.
BMC has already floated a tender for the Biogas Composting Plant and is preparing for the Waste-to-Briquette or Charcoal Plant, which will be built in Palasuni, he added.
However, financial issues need to be resolved before the project can move forward. The goal is to complete the plant within six months of the decision.
Regarding the Waste-to-Energy Plant, discussions are underway with consultants and experts. There’s a plan to process waste from major municipalities like Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, and Jatni at a common location. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently being prepared, which will provide clearer insights into the project, he said.
Majhi added that the state government plans to make energy from waste not only in urban areas but also in panchayats. The Waste-to-Energy Plant is expected to generate around 25 MW of energy from 1,000-2,000 tons of waste.
On this occasion the CM emphasized that BMC needs to work at a greater pace to ensure Bhubaneswar secures the number one status in cleanliness surveys.
