Odisha Home Dept orders fresh verification after 9.8 lakh voters deleted

Bhubaneswar, April 20: The Home (Election) Department has ordered a fresh round of verification after nearly 9.8 lakh names were deleted from the electoral rolls, triggering concern over alleged irregularities. The move comes following multiple complaints that names of living and local voters were mistakenly struck off. Taking serious note, the department has directed Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) to ensure that no name is removed without proper scrutiny. As per the directive, names of deceased voters should be deleted only after thorough verification, with Form 7 to be submitted by family members or close relatives. Authorities have also been instructed to inform voters at their registered addresses if their names are removed. In addition, cases involving suspicious, duplicate, or erroneous entries must be verified through due process, including issuing notices. The department has made it mandatory to carry out physical verification in at least 50% of Form 7 cases. The directive follows allegations that Booth Level Officers (BLOs) failed to conduct adequate field-level checks. Officials have now been asked to closely examine complaints received via the 1950 helpline, email, and other channels to ensure accuracy in the voter list.
