CID Crime Branch Arrests Main Accused in Balianta Case

The Odisha Crime Branch arrested the main accused, Chinu alias Ranjit Patra, in connection with the Balianta mob assault case that shocked the state on May 7, 2026. The arrest followed the CID’s detailed investigation into the brutal attack in the Bhingarpur–Kaja area under Balianta Police Station.Investigators found that Chinu, aged 24 and a resident of Gangeswargada under Cuttack Sadar, allegedly struck the victim on the head with a bamboo stick after the victim’s hands and legs were tied with ropes. The blow proved fatal.Earlier, police had arrested Bunty alias Judhisthira Jena, aged 22, on May 11 and produced him before the court. With Chinu’s arrest, the total number of accused in the case has reached 13, including 11 individuals previously detained by local police.CID officials stated that the arrest was based on substantial evidence gathered during the probe. The agency continues its investigation on priority to identify and apprehend other suspects involved in the crime.The Balianta case, registered under sections 103(1)/3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, has drawn statewide attention for its brutality.
