A deep depression over the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal is moving westwards towards the north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coast and is likely to cross the coast by Wednesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in coastal and southern Odisha under its influence.The system moved westwards at a speed of 7 kmph during the past six hours. At 11.30 pm IST on September 22, it lay centred over the same region, near latitude 18.0°N and longitude 85.0°E.System Likely To Cross Coast Tonight.According to reports, the deep depression was around 100 km east-southeast of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, 150 km south of Gopalpur and 220 km south-southwest of Puri in Odisha. It was also around 180 km east-northeast of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, IMD DG, said, “Moving in a west-northwesterly direction, it will cross the coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur as a deep depression on the night of September 23. At the time of landfall, wind speeds could reach 55 to 65 kmph, with gusts up to 75 kmph. This could uproot small trees, break branches and affect vegetable and paddy crops. Vulnerable structures, particularly old tin-roofed, thatched and mud houses, could also be affected. Rainfall will continue in interior Odisha on September 24, before decreasing on September 25.”Under its influence, heavy rainfall is expected in coastal and southern Odisha. Continuous rainfall might also increase the risk of landslides in hilly areas. Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds during the landfall could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas.Residents have been advised to remain cautious and adhere to the warnings and guidelines issued by the authorities.
