Tehran, 10/7: Amid renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran, the governing council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on Friday asked countries not to recognise Iran’s attempts to assert control over the Strait of Hormuz or its move to create an authority to regulate maritime traffic through the strategic waterway.
The London-based UN agency, which oversees global maritime safety, security and pollution prevention, debated the issue during a meeting of its 40-member governing council, where Gulf nations, the US and Iran expressed sharply differing views.
