Firecracker ban imposed at Narendra Pond for Chandan Yatra in Puri; tight security measures in place

Puri, April 18: Firecrackers will not be allowed at Narendra Pushkarini (pond) during this year’s Chandan Yatra, with authorities imposing a complete ban on their use throughout the 21-day-long Bahara Chandan Yatra. Officials have warned that strict action will be taken against anyone found violating the directive. The decision comes ahead of the festival beginning on April 20, with Puri Police rolling out elaborate security arrangements to ensure the safety of devotees. Puri SP Prateek Singh informed that the entire Narendra Pushkarini area will be brought under CCTV surveillance, along with heightened monitoring during the ceremonial procession of the deities from the Jagannath Temple to the water body.Security deployment will include one Additional SP, five DSPs, eight Inspectors, and around 20 ASIs and SIs, supported by five platoons of police personnel. Anti-sabotage checks will also be intensified across key locations. The move follows the tragic 2024 incident during the Bhaunri Yatra, when a firecracker explosion at Narendra Pushkarini claimed 17 lives. In light of the incident, authorities have enforced a complete restriction on firecrackers at the venue this year.Police officials stated that while traditional rituals of the Chandan Yatra will be conducted as per custom, special emphasis will be placed on crowd management and ensuring public safety throughout the festival.
