Baripada: The government has launched a new initiative aimed at addressing distress migration by creating local employment opportunities for workers and their families and helping them become self-reliant.
Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra launched the initiative at a programme held at the Circuit House in Station Bazaar, Baripada.
In the first phase of the programme, food courts were handed over to five beneficiaries from five blocks of Mayurbhanj district. One beneficiary each was selected from Suliapada, Rasgovindpur, Morada, Baripada and Betanati blocks.
The keys to the food courts were handed over to the beneficiaries in the presence of the Minister, Udala MLA Bhaskar Madhei, Baripada MLA Prakash Soren and Bangiriposi MLA Sanjali Murmu.
Through this scheme, the beneficiaries are expected to earn a livelihood by running food businesses in their respective localities, thereby reducing the need to migrate elsewhere in search of work.
However, considering the scale of distress migration in a district like Mayurbhanj, questions have been raised about whether providing food courts to just five beneficiaries will be sufficient to address the problem.
Opposition leaders have also questioned the initiative, describing it as a drop in the ocean. They have expressed concern that the scheme should not remain limited to inauguration ceremonies and photo opportunities. Instead, they stressed the need to address the root causes of distress migration and extend assistance to a larger number of families in need.
Intellectuals have also expressed the view that the initiative should be expanded from five beneficiaries to at least 5,000 to make a meaningful impact.
Experts believe that distress migration can be reduced only through the creation of employment opportunities at the local level, the identification of eligible beneficiaries and the provision of sustained government support over the long term.
The actual effectiveness of this new government initiative in addressing distress migration in Mayurbhanj district will become clear in the coming days.
