Sambalpur, August 17: The water level of the Hirakud reservoir continues to rise, prompting authorities to open five more gates of the dam to release excess water.Earlier, water was being discharged through two gates. With the opening of five additional gates, a total of seven gates are now releasing water—five on the left side and two on the right side.The reservoir’s water level has reached 619.02 metres. Authorities have increased the discharge as the inflow into the reservoir has risen.The increased release of water from Hirakud has raised concerns over a possible rise in water levels across the Mahanadi river basin. People living in areas along the river have been advised to remain alert and avoid going near the river.The public has also been urged to follow all warnings and instructions issued by the administration. Authorities are closely monitoring the reservoir’s water level and the status of the gates.
