Mahanadi Row: Amit Shah Meeting Odisha, Chhattisgarh CMs in Delhi Today

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will meet the Chief Ministers of Odisha and Chhattisgarh on Thursday to work out a solution to the long-running Mahanadi water dispute. Odisha has long argued that Chhattisgarh built at least eight barrages on the upper stretch of the river without its consent. According to Odisha, these structures cut off the flow of water downstream, hurting its farmers, local fishing communities, and power plants. Odisha considers the Mahanadi its lifeline. Thursday’s meeting comes after recent talks between the two state leaders. On September 20, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai visited Bhubaneswar to meet Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi at his residence. After that meeting, Majhi shared a post on X, calling the talks helpful and noting that both sides want to work together for the welfare and growth of their people. Speaking to reporters when he landed in Bhubaneswar, Sai said there is no big issue between the two states over the river. He said that since the Bharatiya Janata Party is in power in Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and the central government, the matter will be settled quickly. He added that other old river disputes across the country are being solved peacefully, and the Mahanadi issue will be no different. Before this, both Chief Ministers and top officials from the two states met in New Delhi. During those talks, both sides gave their consent to the Central Water Commission to help sort out the dispute through direct talks.
