A woman’s death in Nayagarh district has led to the arrest of her husband and father-in-law, with her family alleging that she had been facing dowry-related harassment at her in-laws’ house. The incident was reported from Pratap Prasad village under Itamati police station. Police had earlier arrested the woman’s mother-in-law in connection with the case. The deceased, Laxmipriya Barik, had married Danda Pani Barik of Pratap Prasad village around six years ago. Her family alleged that she had been facing harassment over dowry since soon after the marriage. Laxmipriya had reportedly been staying at her parents’ home for the past three to four months. Her family said she was reluctant to return to her in-laws’ house but eventually went back after her brother-in-law assured them that she would not be harassed again. Her mother alleged that Laxmipriya called her a day after returning and said that she was being assaulted again. She reportedly stopped answering calls soon after. Laxmipriya’s family has alleged that she was killed at her in-laws’ house on September 19. They accused her husband, mother-in-law and father-in-law of being involved in her death. Following the complaint, police arrested the mother-in-law. The woman’s husband and father-in-law have now also been arrested in connection with the case.
