Bhubaneswar: Two days after a woman was allegedly raped at gunpoint in Nayapalli’s Behera Sahi area, the Bhubaneswar police have made a significant breakthrough after obtaining CCTV footage of the suspected accused. The footage was recovered during an examination of CCTV cameras installed near the crime scene and along adjoining roads. According to the investigation, the accused allegedly fled towards CRP Square after the incident and is believed to have travelled by an Ama Bus before escaping. Police also suspect that he stole a motorcycle on the way to flee the area. Four teams have been formed under the leadership of Bhubaneswar DCP to trace and arrest the accused. One of the teams is collecting information about young men living in and around the area where the survivor resides. Since the locality has several hostels and paying guest (PG) accommodations, police suspect that the accused may have been staying in one of them. According to the complaint, the incident took place late Wednesday night. The survivor was staying with her elder sister on the ground floor of a rented house in Nayapalli. Her sister was away from home at the time of the incident. The survivor alleged that an unidentified man forcibly entered the house at night. The accused allegedly had his face covered, threatened her with a firearm and sexually assaulted her before fleeing the spot. Police are examining the CCTV footage, the Ama Bus route, scientific evidence, the survivor’s statement and information gathered from local residents to establish the accused’s movements and identity. Commissionerate Police said efforts are underway to arrest the accused at the earliest. Meanwhile, the Odisha State Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and sought a report from the Bhubaneswar DCP within 15 days.
