Passport a document to travel to foreign countries, not citizenship proof: MEA

New Delhi, 14/7: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday said that the passport is a document issued by the government to “regulate the departure” of Indian citizens from the country. The statement came amid a raging debate over whether it can be used to verify citizenship.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said passport is issued after due “verification” laid out by an established process and that less than eight per cent Indians currently hold the document.
