Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the ‘Bhajan Clubbing’ programme at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Park in Delhi on September 25, commemorating the birth anniversary of Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya.Earlier on the same day, the Prime Minister paid tributes to Deendayal Upadhyaya, praising his philosophy of “Antyodaya” as the foundation of public welfare and national development. In a post on X, Modi emphasised how Deendayal’s vision continues to guide contemporary policy and grassroots empowerment.“My humble salutations to the true practitioner of national service, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya ji, on his birth anniversary. He regarded the upliftment of the person standing in the last row of society as the foundation of nation-building and gave us the philosophy of Antyodaya, which continues to provide profound inspiration for public welfare even today,” the Prime Minister stated.He encouraged citizens to embrace the thinker’s legacy, adding, “Let us, on this special occasion, reaffirm our resolve to internalise his thoughts and ideals and fulfil our social and national responsibilities. As effort is made, so swiftly does the fruit appear. Thus, human endeavour alone exists; let destiny be that very thing.”Modi also shared a Sanskrit Subhashitam, highlighting that success and innovation result from continuous effort and courage rather than luck.Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya (1916–1968) was a political thinker, economist, and leader of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the precursor to the Bharatiya Janata Party. He founded the magazines Rashtra Dharma, Panchajanya, and the daily Swadesh. His concepts of integral humanism, social justice, and self-reliance continue to influence the BJP’s mission.Born on September 25, 1916, Upadhyaya promoted the ideals of Hindutva through the monthly publication Rashtra Dharma in the 1940s. He was a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) thinker and served as president of the Jana Sangh from December 1967 until his death on February 11, 1968. His body was discovered near the Mughal Sarai junction, later renamed Deendayal Upadhyay junction.Upadhyaya was recognised with several prizes and scholarships during his studies at Sanatan Dharma College, Kanpur, where he joined the RSS. He mobilised a dedicated group of workers committed to idealism and provided the ideological framework for his party. The 1967 historic session of the Jana Sangh was considered the culmination of his political vision and leadership.
