Police encounter in Ganjam: Alleged Rrobbery suspect injured in exchange of fire

Berhampur, July 24: A man accused in multiple robbery and dacoity cases was injured during an alleged exchange of fire with police on a forest road under the Kodala Police Station limits in Ganjam district on Friday.According to police, the accused, identified as Kalia alias Ghanshyam Behera of Naitada Sahi, was being tracked by a police team led by Purushottampur Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) Kulamani Sethi. The operation was launched following intelligence about his movement in the Kodala–Singhasini forest area.Police said Kalia and an associate, who we travelling on a motorcycle, attempted to flee when officers tried to intercept them. During the pursuit, the suspects allegedly hurled bombs and opened fire at the police team. In response, the police returned fire in what officials described as an act of self-defence.Kalia sustained a bullet injury to his right leg during the exchange. He was initially taken to the Kodala Community Health Centre (CHC) and was later shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur, for advanced treatment.The associate reportedly managed to escape, and efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the individual.According to the Ganjam Superintendent of Police (SP), all police personnel, including IIC Kulamani Sethi, are safeand unharmed following the encounter.
