Vedanta Aluminium Plants 2,000 Saplings in Jharsuguda on World Environment Day
Employees, Business Partners and Local Communities Participate in Tree Plantation and Environmental Awareness Initiatives
Jharsuguda: Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, celebrated World Environment Day at its Jharsuguda operations by planting approximately 2,000 saplings across various locations and organising environmental awareness programmes. The initiative, conducted in collaboration with local communities, witnessed active participation from company employees and business partners, strengthening collective efforts towards increasing the region’s green cover and promoting environmental conservation.
Celebrated on November 1, World Environment Day highlights the importance of protecting ecosystems and maintaining a balance between human beings and nature. The initiative aligns with the United Nations’ Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030), a global call to prevent, halt and reverse ecosystem degradation.
Reflecting this spirit, Vedanta Aluminium’s Jharsuguda unit brought together tree plantation and awareness activities to promote a sense of environmental responsibility among employees, community members and local stakeholders.
Commenting on the initiative, C. Chandru, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium Metal Limited (VAML), Jharsuguda, said, “Environmental conservation is an integral part of the way we operate. From enhancing resource efficiency and adopting cleaner technologies to conserving biodiversity, we give it utmost priority. Sustainability-focused initiatives such as this large-scale tree plantation drive further strengthen our commitment to responsible manufacturing and creating long-term value for the communities around us.”
On the occasion, environmental awareness sessions were organised by Vedanta Aluminium experts for employees and business partners, focusing on ecological balance and environmental responsibility. The initiative forms part of the Jharsuguda unit’s broader biodiversity conservation and sustainability efforts, contributing to the expansion of green cover and environmental protection in the region.
Shankar Samanta, an employee of WICL, a business partner of the company, said, “This awareness session has given me a fresh perspective on how even small steps can bring about significant changes for the environment. Learning about biodiversity conservation and sustainable practices has been an inspiring experience. It has motivated me to adopt these practices in my own life as well. I am happy to see such initiatives being organised for the community.”
At its Jharsuguda unit, Vedanta Aluminium has undertaken several initiatives to promote sustainable manufacturing. These include digital monitoring systems for comprehensive water management and advanced Internet of Things (IoT)-based digital sensors to monitor smoke and gas emissions from chimneys.
As of the financial year 2025–26, the unit has deployed 116 electric forklifts. These have helped reduce diesel consumption by approximately 1.63 million litres annually in the main plant operations, contributing to a reduction of 4,450 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions.
Through various initiatives focusing on biodiversity conservation, efficient resource utilisation and community participation, Vedanta Aluminium’s Jharsuguda unit continues to strengthen its commitment to responsible manufacturing while contributing to the environmental well-being of the region.
