Balianta: The villagers of Sudhasarangi have gheraoed Balianta Police Station today demanding arrest of the accused persons in a fatal attack case on a man. They alleged police inaction and demanded immediate action in connection with a brutal assault on a local youth.It is to be noted that earlier a youth named Soumyaranjan had become victim of mob lynching in a place under the same Balianta Police Station limits, further raising concerns over law and order.According to police and family members, the incident occurred on Sunday evening. Laxmidhar Swain of Suddhasarangi village had gone to market in the village to buy vegetables when he allegedly saw a group of youths trying to break open the lock of a school.On objecting, the youths, reportedly in an inebriated state and under the influence of brown sugar, attacked him and beat him mercilessly. As a result Laxmidhar turned critical. Later, he was rescued from the place by his family members and villagers and admitted to hospital.Laxmidhar is currently undergoing treatment in hospital and is said to be in a coma, family members said.Although a complaint was lodged at Balianta Police Station in this regard, villagers alleged that no arrests had been made even days after the attack.Angered by the delay, a large number of villagers, including several women, staged a dharna in front of the police station today and demanded the immediate arrest of the accused and stringent action.With the situation turning tense, police deployed one platoon of force. Two Additional DCPs, an ACP, and IICs of three police stations reached the spot to pacify the protesters. Following discussions, police assured the villagers that the accused would be arrested soon and an investigation was underway based on the FIR. The protest was later called off. Police said the matter is being investigated on priority.
