KIMS Doctors Remove Metallic Nail From 10-Year-Old Girl’s Airway

Bhubaneswar: A team of doctors at the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Bhubaneswar, has successfully removed a metallic nail lodged in the airway of a 10-year-old girl from Koraput, Odisha, demonstrating the hospital’s advanced treatment capabilities.

The child had accidentally inhaled the nail, which was part of a nail art instrument, two days before she was brought to the hospital. Medical examinations and scans revealed that the nail was stuck in the right bronchus, the passage that carries air from the windpipe into the right lung.

A team of specialists from the departments of ENT and Anaesthesiology carried out the procedure using a specialised instrument called a rigid bronchoscope. It is a thin, tube-like device that doctors use to look inside the airways and remove objects that have accidentally entered them.

The procedure was performed under general anaesthesia, with the child kept asleep throughout. The doctors successfully removed the nail without any complications. She recovered well after the procedure and was shifted to the ward for observation.

The procedure was carried out by a team led by Dr Manas Ranjan Rout, Dr Satyanjaya Sahoo, Dr Sneha, Dr Manisha Mallick, Dr Sangram Keshari Das, Dr Supriya Kar and Dr Anjali Kumari.
