New Delhi, 4/1: The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed the Allahabad High Court’s order directing the Uttar Pradesh government to conduct urban local bodies polls without reserving seats for Other Backward Classes.
A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha noted that if elections are held without reservations, a segment of society will be left out. The court also noted the term of local bodies would come to end on January 31.
“We cannot have vacuum in governance. The government is at liberty to issue a notification allowing the discharge of financial obligations. However, no major policy decisions are to be taken in the meantime,” the bench said.
The court issued notice to the original petitioners on a plea by the state government.
