Rayagada: A shocking case of social oppression has come to light in a village in Rayagada district of Odisha lately. A viral video shows a young couple tied to opposite ends of a yoke, being beaten like animals, similar to how farmers rear oxen in their fields. The incident took place in the Kanjam Jodi village under Sikarpai panchayat of Kalyansinghpur block in the district. According to reports, the villagers, opposed to the couple’s love relationship and subjected them to this humiliating treatment. The villagers strongly disapproved of their ‘illicit’ relationship. The couple, who are nephew and paternal aunt (piuṣi) by relation, were forced to wear a yoke on their necks and were beaten mercilessly. The victim, identified as Putura Lak Saraka, was allegedly assaulted along with his girlfriend. Although the incident took place about a week ago, it has only now gone viral, leaving social media users stunned.
