GMR Kamalanga Energy Bags Pollution Control Excellence Award

Bhubaneswar, Sept 24, 2025: GMR Kamalanga Energy Limited (GKEL), a subsidiary of GMR Power and Urban Infra Ltd (GPUIL), has been awarded the coveted Pollution Control Excellence Award-2025 by State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) for its outstanding efforts in reducing and controlling industrial pollution through innovative and effective environmental best practices.

GKEL received the award for its meritorious performance in environmental management and sustainable development under the category of “Industry in a State Level Function,” organized by SPCB, Odisha on the eve of the 42nd Foundation Day of SPCB in Bhubaneswar.

On behalf of the company, Mr Manoj Mishra, Plant Head, received the award from Dr. Kambhampati Hari Babu, Governor of Odisha in the presence of Shri Manoj Ahuja, Chief Secretary & Chairman, SPCB, Odisha and Shri Satyabrata Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary, Forest, Environment & Climate Change Department, Odisha.

GKEL in its journey towards excellence in environmental management, has achieved 100% fly ash utilization and is maintaining zero liquid discharge status.  Its integrated management system (ISO 14001, ISO 45001, EnMS 50001) and strong waste practices have set an industry standard for innovation and environmental responsibility.

 

Speaking on the achievement, Ashis Basu, CEO of GMR Energy, said,“ We are honoured to have been recognised for our initiatives towards effective pollution control measures and adoption of sound environmental management practices at GKEL. We are work on a continual improvement plan to further our efforts and achievements towards conservation and promotion of green and clean environment.”

GKEL is also actively engaged in rainwater utilization & harvesting, organic farming and has created a green belt by plating more than 4 lakh trees over 382 acres of land.

GKEL is a 1,050 MW (3X350 MW) coal-based power plant located in Kamalanga village, Dhenkanal district which is strategically located close to the coal belt. It has long term Power Purchase Agreements with GRIDCO (Odisha), Uttar and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigams, (UHBVNL & DHBVNL), Bihar State Electricity Board (BSEB) and a medium term PPA with Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB).
