Calcutta High Court refuses to stay Bhawanipur by polls

Kolkata, 28/9: The Calcutta High Court has refused to stay the Bhawanipur bypolls on 30 September. Let us tell you that the election for Bhawanipur seat is fixed on 30 September. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is the candidate from here. The petitioner had argued in the High Court that the Election Commission had said in the press note that the decision to hold the by-election to Bhawanipur constituency has been taken “considering the special request and constitutional requirement of the State of West Bengal”. He argued that the commission should not have done so and hence the court should intervene in the matter.

The Election Commission in its plea said that the petitioner is trying to misinterpret the meaning of the word constitutional requirement and said that it cannot be seen as an attempt to influence the voters.
