A massive fire gutted a mattress manufacturing unit in Padmapur, Cuttack late Thursday night, reducing the facility to ashes and destroying property worth several lakhs.Firefighters battled the blaze through the night and continued cooling operations on Friday morning.Two teams from Fire Services rushed to the site after receiving information and launched an operation to contain the flames. Large quantities of mattresses, foam, and chemicals stored inside the unit fueled the fire, allowing it to spread rapidly across the premises.By Friday morning, firefighters managed to control most of the blaze, but thick smoke continued to rise from the factory. Officials confirmed that the entire unit had been almost completely destroyed.Sources reported that goods and machinery worth lakhs of rupees were lost in the incident. The highly combustible materials inside the factory made firefighting efforts more challenging, forcing teams to work continuously to prevent flare-ups.Authorities said it is too early to determine the cause of the fire. A detailed investigation will be conducted once the site is declared safe. Officials emphasised that the exact extent of damage will only be known after assessment.No casualties or injuries have been reported so far. Local authorities assured that a thorough inquiry will be carried out to establish how the blaze started and spread through the factory.
