6-month salary delay allegedly claims teacher’s life; Family blames education department

Balasore, June 24: In a tragic incident highlighting alleged administrative negligence, a teacher from Balasore district reportedly died after enduring months of mental stress caused by the non-payment of his salary.The deceased, identified as Laxmidhar Mohanty of Kuanlakhunta village under Khaira block, was serving as a teacher at Durukhagoda Primary School in Koraput district before being transferred to Sujagada Primary School in Khaira around six months ago.According to family members, Mohanty had not received his salary since the transfer due to the alleged failure of the Koraput Block Education Office to provide the necessary service-related documents. Despite repeatedly approaching the authorities for redressal, his grievances reportedly remained unresolved.Serious allegations have also surfaced that certain officials demanded a bribe to process the pending formalities and release his salary.The prolonged financial hardship and mounting pressure of supporting his family allegedly left Mohanty under severe mental stress. He reportedly suffered a heart attack on Tuesday morning and died shortly thereafter.The incident has triggered outrage in the area. The deceased teacher’s brother, Lambodhar Mohanty, has lodged a written complaint at Khaira Police Station, holding the Education Department and some employees of the Block Education Office responsible for the death.Based on the complaint, police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the matter.
