Odisha received Rs 1,760.71 crore in central assistance under the National Health Mission (NHM) during 2025-26, according to figures placed before the Lok Sabha by Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav on Tuesday. The state received Rs 1,916.79 crore from the Centre through the same health mission in 2024-25.The figures were provided by Jadhav in a written response to a question from BJP MP Pradeep Purohit. The disclosure comes against the backdrop of the Centre’s continuing financial and technical support to states for strengthening public healthcare systems.Under the NHM framework, the responsibility for public health and hospitals rests primarily with state governments and Union Territories. This includes building and maintaining health infrastructure, ensuring adequate healthcare manpower and managing the delivery of public health services.The Centre’s role is to supplement these efforts through financial and technical assistance. Odisha is among the states eligible for this support, which is routed through the NHM under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.The funding process begins with states submitting their requirements through Programme Implementation Plans (PIPs). These proposals are then assessed by the Centre before assistance is approved.Once the proposals are examined, financial and technical support is sanctioned through Records of Proceedings (RoPs). The approvals are made according to prescribed norms and are also subject to the availability of resources.The Rs 1,760.71 crore sanctioned to Odisha for 2025-26 therefore forms part of this broader Centre-state mechanism for supporting public healthcare, while the primary responsibility for infrastructure, manpower and service delivery continues to remain with the state.
