Bhubaneswar, 9 October 2026 Odisha’s disaster management model continues to attract students pursuing studies in disaster management, both within and outside the state. As part of an educational visit to learn from Odisha’s experience in disaster preparedness and response, a group of 40 students from Xavier University, Bhubaneswar, visited OSDMA to learn about Odisha’s disaster management model and its best practices. During the visit, Dr. Kamal Lochan Mishra, Advisor to OSDMA, briefed the students on Odisha’s journey in disaster management since the devastating Super Cyclone of 1999. He highlighted the state’s key initiatives in early warning, preparedness, evacuation, community participation and the use of modern technology and data for effective disaster management. Dr. Mishra emphasised that practical experience and learning from past disasters are essential for effective disaster management. He encouraged the students to explore disaster management through research and study the role of emerging technologies in disaster risk reduction. The visit aimed to enhance students’ understanding of disaster preparedness and response and inspire young people to contribute to building a disaster-resilient society.
