Lucknow, August 23: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced that female passengers, along with one companion, will travel free of charge on Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation buses on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.At a meeting with senior Government officials at his residence on Saturday, the Chief Minister directed officials that female passengers, along with one companion, be allowed to travel free of charge on State-run buses from the night of August 27 to the night of August 28 on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.He directed the Transport Department, police and administration to work together so that women could reach their homes safely and conveniently for the festival.The Chief Minister directed that ‘Anti-Romeo Squads’ remain active to ensure women’s safety. He said traffic management should be optimised and strengthened on major routes.He also issued instructions on the screening and monitoring of bus drivers, saying no driver under the influence of intoxicants should be allowed to operate a bus.He ordered the verification of private bus drivers, auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers to ensure the safety of female passengers. He directed that the Transport and Police departments, must coordinate to ensure safe and smooth travel during Raksha Bandhan.Meanwhile, the West Bengal Government Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday announced that the State Government would officially celebrate Raksha Bandhan from this year. He called the decision as a move not only to uphold the festival’s religious significance but to strengthen social harmony, bonding and the spirit of brotherhood across Bengal.
