Bhubaneswar: A bid to book a cooking gas cylinder online has cost a Bhubaneswar resident nearly ₹2.91 lakh, after he unknowingly downloaded a fraudulent app circulated on social media.The victim, Rajesh Bose of Bapuji Nagar, was searching for a gas booking app online. He came across an app on a social media platform and installed it on his phone.As per his complaint, within hours of the download, money began disappearing from his bank account in multiple transactions.According to the complaint, a total of ₹2,91,000 was siphoned off from his account on May 18. It was only after receiving repeated debit alerts that Bose realized he had been duped.Following the incident, Bose lodged a complaint at the Cyber Police Station here. During preliminary investigation, police found that the stolen amount was withdrawn from an ATM in Assam by the fraudsters.An investigation is underway to trace the accused and recover the money.
